ALLEVIATE BACK PAIN

Back pain is a very common problem, which evidence suggests is likely to affect approximately eight out of ten of us at some point in our lives. Back pain accounts for more lost work days than any condition other than stress. It can affect both men and women, regardless of age. Back pain can be felt anywhere in the spine, but the low back is the most commonly affected region.

There are a number of different causes of back pain including problems with the muscles, ligaments, joints, and discs. Conditions such as arthritis can also affect the spine. Workplace and lifestyle factors can often have an impact on back pain.

Osteopaths complete four years of Musculoskeletal training, which allows them to diagnose the cause of back problems. They are also able to do referrals if further investigations are needed. Osteopaths diagnose by carrying out a detailed case history of your problem, by observing your posture, and by assessing the muscle tone and movements of your spine. They frequently assess the function of other joints such as hips and ankles, to assess whether problems in these areas are having an impact on your back pain.

Osteopaths use a range of hands-on treatment techniques aimed at:

  • Increasing joint mobility

  • Reducing muscle tension and improving function

  • Balancing the ligaments and tendons

  • Improving circulation and lymphatic drainage

  • Reducing postural and mechanical strains

We re also trained to use sports taping and medical dry needling, which can be a useful adjunct to treatment. In addition to hands-on treatment, your Osteopath is able to prescribe tailored exercises, as well as giving lifestyle and postural advice to help you get back to full health as soon as possible, and help prevent future problems from occurring.
