TREATMENT FOR FACET JOINT PAIN

WHAT IS A FACET JOINT?

The facet joints are small stabilising joints situated between each vertebrae.  There are two facet joints in each spinal level.  These joints function to prevent excessive motion and over twisting of the spine.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF FACET JOINT PAIN?

Facet joint pain is one of the most common causes of neck pain and back pain.  Facet joint pain can occur due to slow degeneration (facet joint arthritis), poor posture, or even excessive motion at a joint that causes the local muscles to spasm.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FACET JOINT PAIN?

Facet joint pain will feel like a dull achy pain that might radiate to other areas in your body.  For example, a facet joint strain in the neck can cause pain to radiate to the shoulder.  Restricted movement is common; you may find it difficult to rotate your neck or even extend your back.    Muscle spasms are also common, they usually occur as a way to protect joints from further injury.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR FACET JOINT PAIN?

Treatment of facet joint injuries is straightforward, your osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor will be able to determine which joint is injured.  Treatment for this can include soft tissue massage, stretching to muscle, joint articulation and manipulation.
